What is the SUK Ethics Committee?
It’s a group of people with medical, legal, welfare and other relevant expertise that will use their collective experience to help us all make the right decisions and take the appropriate actions when faced with a challenging situation. The committee will also review the ethical impacts of our internal policies/procedures and our external activities.
The committee will be made up of volunteer members and non-members and will report to the Board of Trustees. It will have an advisory role and the Trustees and Members will still be responsible for SUK’s decisions and actions.
Why is SUK setting up an Ethics Committee?
As you all know (and hopefully love!) surrogacy transforms the lives of all the people involved. We’d like to think that this is always for the better, but we all know that occasionally things go wrong, which can have a big impact on the people involved.
The Trustees feel that SUK has a duty of care to our members, non-members and the public to make sure that we maximise the good things and minimise the bad stuff. We think the Ethics Committee can help us achieve this.
What happens next?
The Trustees are recruiting a Chairperson, who will be responsible for setting up and running the Ethics Committee (with the support of the Trustees and Advisory Board). This role will be open to both Members and external candidates. If you’re interested or know someone outside Surrogacy UK who you think fits the bill then please pass this on to them.
If you feel you’ve got expertise to contribute as a committee member then please get in touch with the Trustees to express your interest.
